about

“Shut It Down”, a new release from Orlando rock outfit Robots Are Dix, is a psychedelic, dynamic musical journey. The track’s opening chord progression is reminiscent of something you’d hear in a George Harrison piece, mixed with an overdriven guitar sound that might fit better in a Soundgarden or Guns N Roses track. Sprinkle in an oscillating synth patch and you have a really great overall representation of what makes this group special.

Lyrically, nothing is wasted. Though some lines repeat, the crescendo in urgency is felt in each word. “Burn the bridges, shut it down” hauntingly repeats like a desperate command in the middle of an apocalyptic scene rife with aliens, wild animals bursting out of their cages, and a maddened populace escaping their mental cages.

While the song might have a serious face, the undertones are a bit tongue-in-cheek, the playful chord progression of the verse serves as a bit of comic relief from its more sinister, minor counterpart in the chorus. The dynamics are stellar as the track never rests comfortably on a grid, allowing it to express a freshness with its “stop and go”, “quiet/loud” momentum that is really glued so well together by the drummer’s subtle feel for each part.

“Shut It Down” is a unique track that offers an amalgam of musical ideas that seem to get along quite well together. It’s a rock song at its core, but there is much more below the surface in this one-of-a-kind production.

lyrics

I’ve been wandering, running, and calling.
The walls are caving in
What a mystery

It’s all right man
You’re just losing
The race to evolution
It’s all right you’re only coming through
in broken little waves

Your hiding place won’t last for long
Burn the bridges
Shut it down
I’m an alien from the underground above

Your hiding place gets you found
Open cages all around
Only animals survive
